Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has officially put pen to paper on a new contract which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2012. Guardiola, who only signs one-year deals as a personal incentive to achieve, verbally agreed the deal at the beginning of this month and has now formally signed on.
Guardiola, who would have been out of contract at the end of this season, recently led Barca to an unprecedented 16 consecutive victories in La Liga which eclipsed a record set by Real Madrid in 1960-61. They have dropped only two points since being held at home to Mallorca on October 3.
The 2009 Champions League winners stand five points clear of Real in the table, and have scored an astounding 73 goals in 24 games. They are on course to beat Real's record of 107 goals in the 1989-90 campaign. As well as winning the Champions League in 2009, the Catalan club also won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup while they defended their La Liga title in 2010.
"This morning, (club president) Sandro Rosell and Pep Guardiola signed the contract that will guarantee the services of the FC Barcelona manager until June 30, 2012,'' the club said in a statement.
